The firmament is an expanse that appears as a vault of heaven to observers on earth. This name for the atmosphere reflects its role in supporting the weight of watery clouds. By creating an atmosphere, God drew up and suspended the lighter parts of the waters above the earth's surface, while keeping the larger, heavier mass below. As a result, the air was positioned between the waters, separating them and fulfilling this apparent purpose.
