Lu 5:1-11 Miraculous Draught of Fishes--Call of Peter, James, and

John.

Not their first call, however, recorded in John 1:35-42, nor their second, recorded in Matthew 4:18-22; but their third and last before their appointment to the apostleship. These calls were distinct and progressive, as seen in other notable servants of Christ.

3. Jesus taught from out of the ship (see Matthew 13:2).

4. He offered them a generous payment for using his boat.

5. Master - This title suggests a relationship already formed with Jesus.

All night - The usual time for fishing then, and Peter knew it was hopeless to fish again without Christ's command, which carried assurance of success.

6. The net was breaking - or beginning to break (Luke 5:7).

8. Depart from me, Lord - This wasn't a wish for Jesus to leave; rather, Peter felt unworthy to be in His presence as a sinner (John 6:68). He was overwhelmed by the glory of Christ.

10. Simon, do not be afraid - The Lord understood Peter's thoughts and feelings. Those who highly esteemed Him were pleasing to the Redeemer's spirit.

From that time on - marking a new stage in their connection with Jesus. Their previous call was simply to become fishers (Matthew 4:18).

11. They left everything behind, just as they had before (Matthew 4:20). After the Crucifixion, they returned to their boats (John 21:3), but after Pentecost, they finally abandoned their secular calling.
