1Ch 23:2-6 Number and Distribution of the Levites.

2. All important measures relating to the public interest were submitted for consideration to a general assembly of representatives from each tribe (1Ch 13:1; 15:25; 22:17; 26:1-32).

3. The Levites were numbered at thirty-eight thousand, four times their number in the early census taken by Moses (Nu 4:1-49; 26:1-51). This significant increase likely led to the classification of the Levites described in the following chapters.

The Levites were counted individually, excluding women and children.

4. Twenty-four thousand Levites were assigned to work in the Lord's house, overseeing specific departments of duty. They were subject to the priests but superior to other temple servants who were not from the tribe of Levi.

5. David praised the Lord using instruments he had created (Am 6:5).

6. David divided the Levites into courses among their fathers' houses, listing only those engaged in work connected with the Lord's house. These classes corresponded to the divisions among the priests and other groups, such as the Nethinim (1Ch 24:20-31; 26:20-28).
