Jotham was twenty-five years old when he began his reign (see 2 Kings 15:32-35).
His mother's name was Jerushah, and she was a descendant of Zadok, a famous priest mentioned in 2 Samuel 8:17.
2 Jotham did what was right in the eyes of God. His government was guided by the same excellent principles that had characterized his father's early reign. However, despite Jotham's efforts to promote good and reform the nation spiritually, the people continued to live corruptly (see 2 Kings 15:35). The widespread wickedness of the people thwarted all his laudable endeavors.
3 Jotham built the high gate of the temple, which was situated on the north side of the hill. This portion of the temple hill was higher than the southern part, earning it the name "the upper gate" (see 2 Kings 15:35). He also repaired and embellished the wall of Ophel, a mound or ridge on the southeastern slope of the temple mount.
4 Jotham built many fortifications in Judah's mountains and forests. He constructed castles and towers in elevated and wooded areas where fortified cities could not be established.
