1Ki 6:5-10 The Chambers Thereof.

The Chambers Thereof.

5. Against the outer wall of the temple, Solomon built chambers that extended over three levels. Each level was wider than the one below it because the walls were slightly narrower as they rose, with a rebate made to support the beams of the side floors without penetrating the wall. These chambers could be accessed from the right-hand side through an interior staircase in the lowest level, which led up to the middle and upper levels.

7. During the construction of the temple, no sound of hammers or axes, nor any iron tools, was heard within its walls. Recent discoveries near Jerusalem have uncovered a subterranean quarry where the temple stones are believed to have been cut. The evidence suggests that the stones were prepared there before being transported on rollers down the Tyropean valley to the site of the temple.

9-10. Solomon completed the main structure of the temple, distinguishing it from the attached chambers and wings. The roof was made of cedar wood.

10. The height of these three levels of chambers was approximately five cubits each. In total, the entire structure stood about fifteen cubits high. The supporting beams of the side walls rested on ledges in the temple wall, connecting the wing to the main building without compromising its sanctity.
