Using the MPV in preaching & teaching
The MPV is designed to sit alongside the translations and study tools you already use. Here are several ways you might incorporate it into your weekly ministry:
-
Public Scripture reading.
Read the MPV aloud during services or small groups, especially in contexts where older English phrasing may be a barrier for newcomers. -
Sermon preparation companion.
Study from the KJV and other translations, then use the Compare view to see how the MPV expresses the same passage. Let the MPV wording help you communicate the text clearly. -
Slides and handouts.
Use MPV wording in your presentation software, bulletins, or printed outlines so that what people see matches what they hear. -
Discussion questions & study guides.
When writing questions for small groups or classes, quote the passage in MPV and then invite participants to compare it with the KJV or other translations they bring. -
Evangelism and counseling.
When reading Scripture one-to-one with someone new to the Bible, the MPV can reduce friction and let you focus more on the meaning and application of the text.
Suggested weekly workflow with the MPV
-
Study the passage in your primary translation(s).
Work through the text in the KJV and any other translations you normally rely on. Consult original-language tools and commentaries as usual. -
Open the MPV Compare view.
Use Compare KJV & MPV to see your passage verse-by-verse in modern English. Note where the MPV helps clarify phrases that might slow listeners down. -
Mark key phrases for use in your sermon.
Highlight or copy MPV wording that you want to use in your slides, outline, or sermon manuscript. You might say, “In the MPV it reads like this…” to help people hear it with fresh ears. -
Prepare visuals and handouts.
Use the MPV text in your projection software or printed materials so that what appears on the screen is simple, clear, and aligned with your spoken message. -
Invite your church to read along.
Point people to the online Read page so they can revisit the passage during the week in the same wording they heard on Sunday.
Guidance & cautions
As with any tool that interacts with Scripture, the MPV should be used thoughtfully. Here are some helpful guardrails:
- Use the MPV alongside, not instead of, formal translations. Let it function as a clarifying voice rather than the only text you consult.
- Check key doctrinal passages carefully. For passages that are central to doctrine or church life, compare the MPV with multiple trusted translations and, when possible, original-language resources.
- Explain what you’re reading from. When using the MPV in a service, briefly note that it is a modern-English rendering of the KJV, created to help people understand the text clearly.
- Encourage Berean spirits. Invite your congregation to compare what they hear with their own Bibles and to bring questions when wording differs.
Print, projection, and digital use
The MPV is intentionally licensed to make it easy for local churches to use the text in practical ways. In most normal church contexts you may:
- Project MPV passages on a screen during services.
- Print MPV excerpts in bulletins, brochures, study guides, and class notes.
- Use MPV wording in sermon manuscripts, books, and online posts with attribution.
For the full details, including attribution wording and any limits for commercial publications, please see the MPV License page.
Feedback from pastors
The MPV project is still growing. Real-world use in real churches is one of the best ways to improve it. If you are a pastor or Bible teacher using the MPV and you notice wording that is unclear, awkward, or could be improved, we would be grateful to hear from you.
Your feedback helps make the MPV a stronger tool for loving God, loving others, and clearly proclaiming the Scriptures in your context.
